Maintenance method of copper handicrafts

①Silver oxide method. Contact with cuprous oxide with silver oxide to seal the exposed surface of cuprous chloride to achieve the purpose of controlling corrosion of copper art. First, mechanically remove the powdery rust, revealing the off-white waxy cuprous chloride. Then silver oxide and alcohol are mixed into a paste, coated on the surface of cuprous chloride, and placed in a humid environment to make it fully work to form cuprous oxide and cupric chloride, covering the surface of cuprous chloride. Both are stable salts, so many times, until the utensils are placed in a high-humidity environment, there is no corrosion point of powdery rust. This method is suitable for utensils with spot-like local corrosion and utensils with metal inlays.

② benzotriazole method. Benzotriazole is a heterocyclic compound, which can form a stable complex with copper and its salts, and form an insoluble and quite strong transparent protective film on the surface of the copper alloy, which can inhibit and stabilize the copper art disease and prevent water damage. Erosion by vapors and air pollutants. Use distilled water, toluene, acetone and other organic solvents to remove soil and oil stains on the surface of copper art, and then immerse it in benzotriazole alcohol solvent for infiltration to form a complex protective film. However, benzotriazole is easily sublimated by heat and loses its protective effect, so finally, a layer of polymer material should be coated on the surface of the copper art as a protective film.

③ lye soaking method. The corroded copper artwork is soaked in sodium sesquicarbonate solution, so that the chloride of copper is gradually converted into stable copper carbonate, and the chloride ion of the copper artwork is replaced and transferred into the immersion solution. The soaking liquid needs to be replaced regularly until no chloride ions appear in the soaking liquid. Then the utensils were repeatedly washed with distilled water to remove the lye, dried and sealed. The alkaline solution only extracts the chloride, and retains the colorful malachite and other corrosion layers, and does not damage the original appearance of the copper art. The disadvantage of this method is that the replacement reaction time is long; in addition, the chloride is not only attached to the surface of the rust layer, but also has penetrated into the deep part of the corrosion crust of the utensils, so it is difficult to replace it completely.
